In the narrow valley between the Amanus and Cassius ranges, stood at one time the city of Antioch, which flourished from the 18th to the beginning of the 12th century BCE, when it was suddenly destroyed. The site is at the southwest corner of the fertile Amik plain, at the point where the Orontes river cuts through the mountains to the sea. The Amanus mountains are crossed by roads to Antioch and Aleppo, the chief pass being Baylan, the celebrated Syrian Gates.
